U-35 Crewmember Friedrich Hermann Oertel

St-Torpedo-Mechaniker Gast Hermann Oertel was born on 30 November 1915 in Leipzig, and served on board U-35 from its commissioning on 03 November 1936 until September 1937.

After torpedo training until September 1938, Hermann Oertel served on board U-30 and U-110 under Fritz-Julius Lemp. For the rest of the war, he served in various training and instruction capacities. 

He was promoted to the officer ranks on 01 July 1944, Crew 1941.

He became a POW of the Soviet Union at the end of the war, and was repatriated in November 1949.

Hermann Oertel passed away on 18 August 1994 in Rostock. His grandson Holger Oertel is a contributor to this website.
