Letter from Gerhard Stamer to Lord Mountbatten, December 2nd, 1956:

Eure Exzellenz, hoch zu verehrender Herr Admiral! Wieder naht das Weihnachtsfest und das Jahr 1956 senkt sich seinem Ende zu, da darf ich mir traditionsgemäss erlauben, Ihnen, Herr Admiral und Ihrer ganzen Familie auch im Namen meiner Frau unsere allerherzlichsten Wünsche für ein frohes Fest und gesegnetes neues Jahr zu übermitteln! Möchte Ihnen der Herr Gesundheit geben und die Kraft nach Seinem Willen an verantwortungsvollem Posten zu wirken. Friede auf Erden und allen die guten Willens sind! Mit grossem Interesse haben wir Ihren Deutschlandbesuch verfolgt, wobei Sie ja auch wohl in die alte Heimat Ihres Hauses hier im Hessischen gekommen waren, ich habe mir ein Bild aufgehoben, wo Sie, Herr Admiral, mit unserem Bundeskanzler photographiert sind. Sie werden unsere grosse Freude verstehen können, dass unsere beiden Grossadmiräle die furchtbare Zeit von Spandau hinter sich haben. Es sind damit viele Bedenken gefallen, mit vollem Herzen beim Aufbau der Bundesmarine mitzuarbeiten. Meine Frau und ich tragen uns mit dem Gedanken im kommenden Jahr England zu besuchen und, wenn Sie Herr Admiral erlauben, möchten wir dabei auch als einfache Touristen Ihnen unsere Aufwartung machen. Indem wir unsere Wünsche für Sie, Herr Admiral, ihre verehrte Familie und ganz England zusammenfassen, verbleiben wir Euer Exzellenz sehr ergebener G. Stamer

Your Excellency and Highly Respected Admiral, Christmastide is approaching once more and the year 1956 is coming to its end. So I hope you will permit me according to tradition, to send in my name and that of my wife our very heartiest wishes to you, Admiral, and your entire family for a happy Christmas and a blessed New Year. May the good Lord give you health and strength according to His will to enable you to work in your responsible position. We followed your visit to Germany with great interest and I expect you were able to visit your family home in Reese. I have kept a photograph in which you, Admiral, appear with our Chancellor. You will understand our great joy that both our Admirals of the Fleet now have their terrible time in the Spandau prison behind them. With this act many doubts have disappeared and with full hearts we can now work on the reconstruction of our national navy. My wife and I are thinking of visiting England during the coming year and if you, Admiral, will permit it, we would like to wait on you as simple tourists. Finally we send you and your honoured family our very best wishes and remain your Excellency’s most sincerely, G. Stamer

To which Lord Mountbatten replied on 14 December 1956:

Dear Herr Stamer Thank you for your Christmas letter and good wishes which I appreciate and reciprocate. If you and your wife do come over to England next year, we shall be delighted to see you if you will give us good warning.
