First commander of U-35, Klaus Ewerth
Klaus Ewerth was born on 28 March 1907 in Angerburg, East Prussia, and entered the Reichsmarine in 1925 (Crew 1925).

Klaus Ewerth was commander of U-1 from 29 June 1935 until 30 September 1936, after which he reported to construction training for U-35. He was commander of U-35 at its commissioning on 03 November 1936.

On 07 December 1936, Klaus Ewerth was assigned to soon-to-be-commissioned U-36, and Hans-Rudolf Rösing was assigned to U-35.

Klaus Ewerth served as commander of U-36 from its commissioning on 16 December 1936 until 31 October 1938. He then served as commander of U-26 from August 1939 until 03 January 1940. For several years he then served in various positions on land, but returned to command U-850 on 17 April 1943 until 31 October 1943 as a training boat. On 01 November 1943, U-850 was assigned to a combat role, and was sunk with all 66 hands lost on 20 December 1943.
